From September 25 through October 2, 2008, Bloomberg BusinessWeek Research Services (BWRS) conducted 551 online interviews with U.S. investors that have annual incomes greater than $100,000. The overall margin of error for this study is ± 4.17% at the 95% confidence interval and higher for subgroups.

In the face of an uncertain investing landscape, affluent investors are staying conservative
Bloomberg BusinessWeek Research Services has found that, in the face of an uncertain economic landscape, affluent investors are maintaining a conservative approach to their investment strategies. With a focus on securing their investments and having enough assets for retirement, these investors are looking for more information about investing and are continuing to rely on financial advisors.

Research highlights include:

  • Investors are taking a conservative approach: More than half of affluent investors say they are currently taking a conservative approach to their investment strategies.
  • Uncertain view on 2009 investing landscape: One-third of affluent investors agree that 2009 will be a great year for investing, while one-third disagree.
  • Top investing goal is retirement: Two-thirds of affluent investors say their most important investing issue is having enough assets for retirement.
  • More information on long-term investing: About half of affluent investors want more information on investing for the long-term.
  • More information on new investing opportunities: Fully 43% of affluent investors want more information about new investment opportunities.
  • Many use a financial advisor: Half of affluent investors use a financial advisor to manage their investments and most are satisfied with them and the advice they give.
